I am extremely disappointed with this printer. My main motivation for purchasing it was the wireless capability, but I have been unable to get the wireless function to work. When I print the settings page, it indicates that all is correct, yet I simply cannot get it to work wirelessly. I tried to connect the printer both to my home network and using an adhoc peer to peer connection and neither would work. very frustrating! the software installation is extremely buggy and took several tries to install the printer even using a USB connection. I am really good with computers but this product has completely baffled me...HP customer service via email is a joke. I wanted this printer for the auto-document scanner and wireless features.
Wireless printing works with no problem but when trying to scan, error messages came up stating that there is no computer connected.
After a lot of time and frustration, I finally fixed that problem only to run into a more annoying one.
When using the auto feed scanner, the message came up that there was a paper jam, open and close the top cover to fix. Well, there was no paper jam. No paper anywhere yet the scanner refused to work. The only way I managed to get around this was to restart the printer every time I needed to scan a new document. What a waste of time.
This will be returned tomorrow for a different brand.

First of all, I must make clear I'm using this printer with computers running Ubuntu Linux, using version 2.8.10 of the HPLIP driver software (the first version to support it). I have no comments on the Windows or Mac software that comes with the printer, as I don't use it.

I set the printer up with the control panel it has, it found my home network (802.11g, WPA2 encryption) immediately and I entered the network password and it connected first time. (after a power cut later, it reconnected itself fine).

The printer setup on my Linux computer automatically found the printer (wirelessly) without any problem and configured it in under a minute. Printed test page fine.

I've since printed other documents, done a 400MB full-page 1200dpi scan, sheet fed photocopies, enlarged photocopies etc all without any problem. All wireless (where applicable), haven't needed to plug the USB cable in. It just works. I haven't had any reason to test the fax features (don't have a landline phone).

Quality-wise, color images are not quite as good as my older (wired) HP C3180 printer, but still quite acceptable. For printing and (especially) scanning the J4680 is fairly slow, for home use that doesn't really matter.

I've even set up my Nokia E51 phone to print wirelessly to this printer, again a matter of entering the configuration details on the phone and it just worked.

I've deducted one star for the lack of a backlight on the screen, it's really hard to read in anything other than perfect light. Other than that, I'm struggling to find anything to complain about. This printer does an excellent job. I bought mine on sale (Black Friday) for $[...] from Tiger Direct. I would have preferred to get it from Amazon, but they had no such sale. I think this printer gives you all that you need if you are looking for a true all-in-one printer with fax and wireless capability. The J4680 also gives you a document feeder that works for copying/scanning/faxing documents. I was originally considering the Canon MX850 (mainly because it was ranked #1 on consumer reports). My main requirements were that the device had to have fax capability and be networkable (via ethernet or wireless). I believe both printers have a max 4800 x 1200 dpi for color scans. After reviewing the pros/cons of each device and finding the lowest Black Friday price on the MX850 to be $[...] vs. $[...] for the J4680, it was a no brainer. For one thing, the MX850 is a beast; it's huge. See the dimension comparision that follows:

MX850: 20 x 19 x 10.2 inches, 43 pounds
J4680: 17.1 x 15.8 x 8.5, 13 pounds

Some other differences to note: The MX850 is not wireless, it has an ethernet connection. So, both printers do allow you to link into your wireless printer and print wirelessly. In hindsight, I'm glad I went with the J4680, as it has a wireless (no ethernet) connection. This might come in handy one day when we move, and a CAT5 wired connections isn't ready available without a nearby router. I wanted to have as few as wires as possible. Wire-clutter is a pet peave of mine; I also wanted the printer to be as "mobile as possible" without the need for a nearby CAT5 jack.

I think ink costs for the Canon are less than the HP (if you buy brand-name HP/Canon cartridges). This wasn't a showstopper for me as I never buy brand name manufactured ink cartridges anyway as I believe they are a rip-off. You can get great generic ink cartridges that do just as good of job. Besides, if you are wanting to print pictures and get great, high quality prints, you shouldn't be printing them at your house, as you can get them printed a lot cheaper (with better dpi) from you local Walmart/Sams Club/Costco or online. Don't waste your ink.

Three other differences that came to mind when I made my decision were:

1) the J4680 lacks a media card reader (no biggie, you can get one on sale online for under $[...] if you don't have one).
2) the J4680 has no color LCD viewer--it just has a monochrome lcd display. Truly, I've never understood the big deal with LCD color viewers on printers. I'd rather view the picture on my LARGE laptop screen anyway to determine if I want to print the pic or not.
3) the J4680 doesn't print on both sides of the paper. This is a functionality I wish it had, but I wasn't willing to pay an extra $[...] to get it from the MX850(thus my 4 vs. 5 star rating). There are other printers out there that have this functionality, for a lower cost, if this is a big deal to you.

That's all for my two cents on the J4680 vs the MX850. I'm glad I went with the J4680. It is a great, small/compact device (wireless) that is a true all-in-one printer. BTW, I had no major issues setting up the wireless connection. I did have to enable MAC filtering on my router, but after I did that, the J4680 worked like a charm--and I'm printing from two different laptops, wirelessly--one with XP, the other with VISTA (btw VISTA sucks, but that's for another forum).

****Update 9-7-09******
HP released updated drivers in 05-2009. The drivers have fixed some finicky connection issues I've experienced. Prior to updating the drivers, I would sporadically not be able to wirelessly connect to the printer. It seemed the issue would occur if I went into sleep mode and came out of sleep mode--I'd lose my connection and sometimes would have to reboot before the connection would be re-established. I experienced similar problems if I took my laptop to the office and then returned home and tried to reconnect to the J4680 at home--most times I couldn't connect. Now with the updated drivers all these problems are gone. I was frustrated with the finicky connection prior to updating the drivers. Now, after updating the drivers I have no problem after going into sleep mode or connecting to the printer after coming home from work. It is working like a charm. I'm glad the HP driver division got their act together.

I've owned about 6 different printers over the years and this one is by far the worst. Here are the issues.

1. Wireless function is extremely faulty. My IT guy has had to install and reinstall it several times. It works for a while and then for no reason just stops working, currently I have it hard wired to my computer because the wireless was so faulty.

2. Usability is confusing. Every employee who tries to print, fax or scan is messing with the machine for at least a couple minutes before they figure it out. This is definitely not "so easy a caveman could do it."

3. Paper Jams. We have bets around the office of how many pages it will get through for a fax or copy before it jams. At this point the bets are no longer fun because it always jams after just the first or second page.

When you add these issues up it makes trying to use this printer a time waster and office productivity suffers.

First of all, I am an IT professional with over ten years of experience, so readers can rule out user errors. The printer hardware is good. It prints and scans quickly and quietly for its price. The supporting software, though, is abysmal. I have downloaded the latest version of the "HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver 10.0.0" and installed it on three different computers: Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
1. On all computers, when installing the "HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver 10.0.0," Adobe Flash Player is corrupted. I have tried to report this problem with the installer to HP customer support, only to waste two hours talking to a technician who did not seem to be paying attention to what I was saying: "there is a bug with the installer, please write it down so that it is corrected in a future version."
2. On all computers, the scanner works intermittently. Every so often, in the middle of a job, the operation will be cancelled because the connection to the scanner is dropped. This is especially annoying when it happens towards the end of a 50-page job.
3. The HP software interferes with basic commands on the Windows XP Professional computer, such as opening a file by double clicking it. It will take it 30 to 60 seconds to open a small MS Office Excel file, for instance.
4. The Windows XP Media Center Edition computer will not shut down.

I have tried scrubbing and reinstalling the software on all three computers several times, with no success. All problems disappear as soon as you scrub the HP software, though. In the end, it is too late for me to return this--I thought I would be able to troubleshoot this, but I have concluded that the HP software is buggy. Except for problem number 2, you can avoid all others by only installing the basic driver instead of the full bundle. But that would require that you have other software to handle scanning.

Printing wirelessly works fine, but scanning is completely faulty. I had had similar problems with another HP Officejet 4110 and thought I would solve them by buying a newer model--I was wrong. Okay so I got this for a Christmas present for the house to make printing easier for everyone. Also added Linksys N-Router.

1) After taking a whole day to set it up got the computers and printer working. It seemed to work for about 2 weeks with a couple of Printer disconnected episodes. I'm pleased that it gives as many features as it does for the modest price. The print quality for typical printing is fine and the wireless connectivity has been fine to this point. My only disappointment has been with the document feeder. I've used my printer in the past few years far more for scanning of personal records than for print jobs. I was really hoping that the document feeder would make my scanning jobs easier. So far, I've found the feeder not good at all. With more than one document, it doesn't feed them to the correct beginning and end of subsequent sheets so they get chopped up and split between various sheets of the scan page. I like the wireless capacity of this product but my computer has problems with it when it downloads updates. My computer does't want to accept it. I usually research before I buy but since I have a long history with HP printers and nothing but great experiences I didn't do any research when I wanted upgrade to a wireless printer. My bad.

I wasn't thrilled with the design or color, but it fit perfectly on my shelf that's why I jumped in when I saw this basic model with wireless capabilities.

I'm computer savvy so installing a printer is a no-brainer. I followed the instructions to a T. The first installation failed so I uninstalled, cleaned my disk, rebooted and tried again. This time it was successful and seemed to work fine. I tested the wireless printing and fax and they both worked like a dream. The next day I noticed a ticking noise. Did some basic troubleshooting and it didn't go away. The next day it went away on it's own. The next day I tried to scan but could only scan from the computer, I could not scan directly from the printer. I reached out to HP CS and the HP forums to no avail. I just found that many other people were having the same problems. The next day the printer started going offline for no reason and my computer settings were messed up. It wiped out my flash and some user settings. I uninstalled, packed it up and am returning it.

After researching I bought the Epson Workforce 600. It cost a little more and doesn't fit on my shelf but many user reviews say it works and it's pretty. I will post a review once I have it set up.

One last thing, the new HP printer software is not an improvement from previous versions. It is slow and stupid.

P.S. I have Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop.

Update...I ended up exchanging the Epson Workforce before even setting it up because it was just too big for my small office. I bought the Brother MFC-490CW because it is a multifunction with built in wireless and a very small footprint that fits on my shelf. I will be writing a review for the Brother MFC-490CW shortly. Vista software compatability notice: The box said it was Vista compatible. All the features seem to work with my Vista 32 bit system, but the scanner function had problems. I loaded the software from the CD twice, and from the HP website (full 273 Meg version), and the scanner would not work. I searched the internet, and saw a lot of blogs that said the HP scanner did not work with Vista. (My old Lexmark had similar blog messages about Vista working with scanners).

I called HP at 800-474-6836. The wait was much less than I anticipated. The tech who got my call did a supurb job. He remotely logged onto my PC and found the problem(s). He got the scanner working, then also tested the multi sheet feeder. He fixed everything in one call.

If you have Vista, and use this HP scanner, budget time with HP tech support to fix the Vista related software issues. Blogs accurately reported scanner software issues related to Vista with this product, but the HP tech fixed the problem, without downloading any extra software. The problems reported by the blogs, and encountered by myself, were only (scanner & Vista) related. If you don't use the scanner and Vista, you might not run in to any problems.

This might be a long review, but if I had read this review before I bought the product, I would be glad someone wrote it, and forewarned me about what to expect with the Vista compatability issue, especially since the box said it is Vista compatable.

I expected 100% compatible with Vista, but the scanner needed some TLC from the HP tech. The other product features do work with Vista, but I needed help from the HP tech support line for the scanner feature to work, and a lot of blogs reported this issue.

I had to replace another OfficeJet that died two days after the warranty expired. It was a decent machine, or at least I thought. I was used to it. I just bought this piece of junk and was unable to get the software to run correctly.

First of all, I couldn't figure out how to save the scan preferences, except by creating an annoying shortcut. Why can't they just be saved globally?

I bought this printer and it works very well. After I got the first Laptop connected through HP Tech Support I hooked up the second laptop with no problem. I wanted a wireless, full function, printer. The J4680 appeared to have the right features; the price was right and I though I would be safe with HP. WRONG
The unit arrived in a timely manner but would not function. The menu was stuck in a language I can't read, the ink carrier would not travel completely to the right enough to allow me to install the ink cartridges and the paper feed mechanism would only feed paper half-way into the printer and then jam. I sent it back.

If it didn't jam the paper so often I would have given it a 2-3 star rating. This printer uses the "bend paper in a U shape to print" feed-from-below-and-return-ontop-of-the-same-tray method, which should work fine but this is the 2nd HP printer I have used over a period of 7 years that both had the same feed method and both jammed paper with frustrating regularity.

Also, HP really wants to market their brand, so when you load in the printer software you now have an HP toolbar on your internet browser (better toolbars by far are available) with lots of HP links; there is an HP icon permanently on the lower toolbar of your computer; there are constant HP updates your computer is trying to download. For paper type the print function box lists 6 or 7 HP papers by name (HP Glossy White? HP Presentation White?), or "other glossy papers". It is so obvious a marketing trick that it is sort of insulting.

With all that effort on marketing you would think they would spend some time on customer service. My printer ran out of black ink in normal usage. No warning on my screen (Epson would have given plenty of warning); there was no indication that the print could not be done properly because there was no black ink (Espon would warn first), it just printed the page as a marred product, a color page that did not look right, so I looked for the print utility diagnostic, which so much harder to get to than an Epson utility diagnostic, HP having a convoluted diagnostic path that never even mentions checking the ink level (one of the first Epson steps), the print-test-page prints a page but gives no help in analyzing it (Epson does): Compared to an Epson the HP is aggressive on marketing to the point of being annoyingly invasive, and short on being user friendly.

Yes, it does the print-scan-fax thing OK (except for the paper jamming part), but to my mind the ease of use and the attitude of the company becomes a real part of the operational factors. I bought this printer for my daughter who wanted it for college; when she decided she didn't like it I bought her an Epson. When my Epson ran out of ink I figured I would use this as it had ink in it. The experience has not made me a fan of HP desktop printers.

I recently purchased the HP OfficeJet J4680 all-in-one printer. This is the worsted printer I ever had.
After installing its software on my XP-pro the performance of my machine went to almost 0. It was hanging all the time, taking forever to open any other program, including its hp software.
I had to un-install it. The install and un-install takes hours like I would be a huge server.

Two stars in that it's a relatively cheap wireless multifunction printer. However if you don't need a printer right away then try to get the Canon MX850 instead.

Canon's installation or setup could also be improved, but I didn't have to look for the manual to figure it out. HP's software is unbelievably bloated and is crap at troubleshooting wireless setup- the manual also did not help. HP's website has a Basic Print and Scan Driver that's much better than the bloated software it comes with in the CD. If you run into a setup problem then go to HP's support site and search under all-in-one firewall and the name of your firewall. Apparently HP's all-in-one printers require a special setup because the ports they use are blocked by firewalls by default.

Once the setup is done the printer works well enough, but know that duplex printing has to be done manually and do not ever buy the 901 black cartridge. The printer comes with two cartridges, the 901 black and 901 tri-color. I don't use that much color so I'm not sure how long that will last, but the 901 black had to be changed way too soon. Just a couple of things I can share on my printer.
1. I made approximately 21 copies, standard written pages, some not even full pages, and after approximately 21 copies, the black cartridge said EMPTY, or seriously low, change cartridge. This was the one reason I got rid of my older Dell all in one model 962, the ink cost so much, and now I replaced it with an all in one that empties in 21 copies of standard print, no thanks. This could be a result of HP packing a cartridge with literally no ink in it as part of the original purchase, but I could not take that chance.
2. This machine had a slight ticking sound that would just start after it was powered up for a while. Just loud enough to bother the user.
3. Once the PRINT command was made, it took this machine approximately 10-15 seconds to respond and start printing.

I never got past a few copies and a few prints, never scanned anything, as I was done when I viewed that empty cartridge deal after just a very few copies. I sent the printer back to Amazon for a refund. I purchased the HP Photosmart C4599 to replace it, and so far, so good!

Once this printer started printing, it is lightning fast. One final thought, the on and off button was not right. I would have to push it twice to turn off and on, or the reaction time of the switch was slow, as I would depress the power button, and it would take several seconds to light up green. I love HP printers. I have a ten year old laser 1012 that still makes beautiful documents. But this is the first HP I have ever returned. It is not easy to set up, and once it is set up, it doesn't stay set up. First; if you want to use this printer wirelessly, set it up ONLY using the wireless installation. I'm on a mac OS X PPC.

My initail gripe with this product was that the scanned images strangely are saved crooked 25% of the time. The page is inserted straight, the scan app shows it is straight, the saved image file is crooked. Go figure. The color also almost always needs adjusting and there seems no way to set an auto-preference for color adjustment. Spend more, get a better scanner.

It also must always be turned ON. Our last HP printer would automatically turn on when you printed from your networked computer.

UPDATE: This printer is nothing but problematic, consistently having problems. It's not worth the cheap pricetag. We're going to spend more and NOT on an HP printer. I love this printer! The convenience of an all-in-one wireless machine is absolutely great. We work on our laptops all over the house and printing from anywhere is a breeze, and we've owned this machine for several months. The print quality is good, and so is the printing speed. The copying feature is quite slow, but acceptable. The scanning feature is also slow, but the automatic feeder is great for scanning multiple page documents. Vista has trouble with the scanning, and until the fix is released your pages may not come out well. I did not install the fax, so I have no idea about that.

The annoying feature of this printer is that it eats the ink. If you don't set it on "fast draft" (which is quite good quality and very fast), keep a good stash of cartridges. Even with the fast draft feature on, the ink goes quicker than on my previous inkjets. The installation was relatively easy. What actually takes a while is figuring out precision printing. I had more trouble with this printer than others to print some of my documents with images and fancy stuff perfectly on special paper, with everything printing in the exact position it should be. The price is good for the printer. The ink is pricey, but that's nothing new for HP. BUT... there's NO USERS GUIDE!!! They include the Wireless Guide, and a Faxing Guide, but there's no HARDCOPY Users Guide. They want you to go on-line for the 168-page guide and use it from there, or print it yourself. Insane!!! I spent FOUR HOURS calling HP and going on-line for a live chat. They have NO HARDCOPY Users Guide even available. They never printed any. How is someone (like my 70-something Mom) who got the unit as a gift for Mother's Day and who has no PC (but just makes copies and sends faxes) supposed to figure out the more complex copier functions???!!! You have to use the "OK-double-arrow" buttons for all the more complex copier functions. How do I know that? I went on-line to look it up, because it was not the least bit obvious, as there are no buttons for reduction/enlargement, paper-type and all other similar functions. When we opened up the box we were floored that there were NO BASIC INSTRUCTIONS for the unit. We just assumed that HP forgot to put a copy in the box. Makes sense, right? After all, there's nothing written on the box indicating that there's no hardcopy of the Users Guide in the box. Inside the box, same thing. HP does not say anything about the fact that basic instructions for using the machine is NOT supplied with the unit. This incredibly important fact should be made known to any and all buyers. Right? Insane!!! And, when you call HP or go on-line for a live chat, you converse with people with poor English skills who haven't Clue One as to what to tell you. They just keep telling you to go on-line for the Users Guide. When I keep telling them that the owner of the machine has no PC, and lives nowhere near me, they couldn't care less. HP, you've lost your way. I'm all for reducing paper usage. But, you shipped this machine with 2 large instruction manuals (for wireless hookup and faxing) written in FOUR languages that are useless to many users. Gee, maybe not including manuals in four languages might help reduce paper waste, and might leave enough paper for a simple Users Guide, written in just one language. Instead of writing everything in four languages, why not require people who do NOT speak English to have to go on-line for THEIR MANUAL. If anyone else thinks NOT including a basic Users Guide with a multi-purpose machine is incompetance, then contact HP and let them know. Unless we make a fuss for HP's poor judgement on this issue, then HP will just keep going on its merry incompetant way. In 2009 I decided to upgrade my printer because HP stopped supporting the drivers on my old HP. I guess their problem was that my old model was too reliable and they weren't making enough money on repairs.

The short story is that this printer started with a feed issue that rapidly turned into misprints, misfeeds and finally a terminal cartridge/paper jam that I'm in the midst of trying to work out with HP and their repair department. So if you're thinking of upgrading don't, the old models are better and more reliable.

The long story: From day one I noticed that the paper was feeding erratically some times causing a lot of noise and misprints; while I thought it was just a bug it later it morphed into a feed issue then ultimately a fatal cartridge jam brought on by a misfeed.

Customer support is extremely weak. You would think that they could pull your registration information and work from there once you provide the serial number and customer name, think again, don't bother registering because that apparently is only a waste of your time.

The process you will follow when your printer fails (and it will) is this:
1. E-mail that you have a problem
2. Wait a week for a response and apology that it took so long to get back due to high volume (Coincidence? I think not)
3. Follow their procedure, see improvement for one print cycle
4. See printer fail in a new spectacular manner and become incapacitated
5. E-mail that their recommendation has resulted in said failure
6. Receive another e-mail telling you now that they need your information again so that someone else can call you and tell you how you can send it in for a replacement or repair
7. Still waiting for the call...

The other reviewers are right on...the paper feeder needs to be cleaned each time you use it. the connectors on the ink cartridges need to be cleaned constantly (about every other time i print color, i have to pull the color cartridge out and clean). Often it "prints" a blank page before starting just for the heck of it, or so it seems. It's a major hassle everytime you want to print or fax or scan anything. Beware: it's just a piece of junk. I've used Epson printers exclusively for the past 10+ years, so this is my first HP. I've been using this HP printer for a few months now and am very disappointed with it. You have to do major tweaking with the color print options on everything you print, and even then, it still looks washed out and muted. I've tried different papers, different settings, actually tweaking the images in Photoshop to bring out color and contrast (thus ruining the image for use with other printers) -- nothing comes out colorful, defined, spectacular, or vibrant like even my old workhorse Epson 880c could produce. I was looking to save money on ink by going with an HP printer, but I've ended up spending a fortune on ink and paper for this printer because I've done so much experimenting just to get a decent printout!

If accurate color isn't a priority for you, then it's an OK printer -- the wireless is very nice, love the (black/white) photocopying. For me though, good color printing is a priority and I'll be digging up my old Epson for that.

Also, the scanner on this machine is lame. If you scan anything that is not completely flat (I was scanning jewelry, which I've done on my old flatbed scanners with awesome results), the image is blurred in different places on the scan -- even the parts touching the glass.
